Home gyms are designed to offer a workout for your entire body with one piece of equipment. The greatest advantage they have over free weights is the ability to get that workout in a safe and contained environment with reduced risk of injury. It is that convenience that makes them so incredibly popular in the fitness market today. It can also make them appear complicated, what with all of the weights and attachments sticking out here and there.
Before you look at the big pile of moving parts and give up before you get started, let’s take a look at the basic parts of most home gyms:
In basic terms, the station is where you are while you are working out. It is usually a bench or seat of some description, and some multi gyms have multiple stations for different exercises.
Arguably the most crucial element of the home gym is the weight stack. With the resistance created by that big pile of blocks, your workout would be pointless at best. Most basic weight stacks are adjusted by removing a pin and reinserting it at your desired weight. Some multi gyms use alternatives to the cumbersome weight stack, replacing it with rods or bands of varying degrees of tension.
Everyone knows what a bench press is. Press arms allow you to do this and other upper body strengthening exercises.
Usually found on higher end machines, this tool exercises your arms and chest in ways that the press does not, providing greater depth of definition.
The T-shaped bar with padded rollers that is located at one end of the bench on your home gym allows you to work both the upper and lower leg muscles in a controlled environment with a lower risk of injury.
The lat (short for lateral) bar is most commonly a long bar connected in the center to a cable that is in turn connected to the weight stack. It can be used in a seated, standing or kneeling position to provide a range of exercises for the different muscles in your upper body. Some machines also offer a low pulley as well. They are located near the bottom of the machine. The movement of the low bar differs in that it allows for a forward and back motion, similar to that of rowing.
