Maximise the Benefits of Your Treadmill Time

Don't rush in!

One of the most important things, that must never be forgotten, is to warm up properly. Failing to warm-up can lead to muscle soreness, cramp and tightness in the legs. All of these can either hinder your enjoyment/progress on the treadmill, or even worse cause an injury. Even a small injury through incorrectly warming up can escalate in to something more serious over time, which will only hinder your training further.

Meal timings

As you can imagine, jogging right after a meal can not only be uncomfortable, but cause cramps and nausea. While it is important to keep energy levels up, the timing of your run can make a big difference. Some people suggest running first thing in the morning before breakfast, others later in the day. The key is to avoid just after a meal, and not running on empty. Before breakfast is a great way to kick of he metabolism for the day, however if you feel too hungry at this time it may be better to wait until later in the day.

Water/Fluids

The benefits of staying hydrated are well known. Not only can it increase your performance level by up to one fifth, staying hydrated can also aid recovery. Avoid fizzy and sugary drinks as these can make you feel bloated, or add unnecessary calories. When possible stick to water or isotonic drinks. These will offer the best levels of hydration. Sipping a little and often is better than drinking a lot at one time, to avoid feeling bloated.

Measure performance

Keeping a simple record of your workouts can make a massive difference. Keeping a training log means that you can measure your improvement and get extra motivation beat your previous best. Steadily improving yourself like this is one of the best methods of improving health and fitness over time. It's important to keep pushing yourself to keep improving fitness, and will always make you feel like you have achieved something. It takes a few seconds to keep a log, but the benefits can be immeasurable.
