How to Install a Home Gym

All things considered, a home gym may well be one of few luxuries in life that are good for you. It’s like making an investment in your personal well being. Now that you have purchased one and you’re ready to set it up and get healthy, here are a few things that you should take into consideration:

Location

In order to get the most out of your new purchase, you need to make sure that you set it up in an area that makes it easily accessible from all usable sides and above. Avoid corners and high traffic area if at all possible, as they might interrupt your workout time making it less beneficial.

Air

Proper air flow is absolutely crucial to a good workout. When we exercise our heart rate increases and we need more oxygen. Rooms with poor ventilation should be avoided, but when they cannot a fan can often provide much needed air flow.

Power

Make sure there are adequate power outlets available in your chosen area for the equipment and other essentials such as music or television. You might also consider adding a surge protector to protect your investment in the event of a sudden power outage or storm.

Lighting

Good lighting is necessary for practical purposes as well as safety concerns. Make sure any lighting fixtures (especially those on the ceiling) allow for a safe clearance during your exercise routine.

Flooring

The surface you work out on can often be overlooked, but it shouldn’t be. Hardwood floors, sturdy vinyl or even rubberized mats are excellent choices.

Atmosphere

You’re presumably going to be using this space quite often, but if it is dark and dismal exercise will be a drudgery that you will put off whenever possible. Therefore it is a good idea to avoid dark, windowless rooms if you can. Make your workout space a fun place to be. Maybe you can paint in bright colors or add some inexpensive mirrors - which are also excellent for checking form during exercise. Some plants or fun artwork can make an otherwise boring space a lot more enjoyable to spend time in.

Other Considerations

  • Don’t forget to measure doors and stairways to ensure that you’ll be able to get your equipment into the space you’ve set aside.
  • Inexpensive soundproofing might be necessary, depending on where your gym is located in relation to others.
